Galway United set to end home blues against the whipping boys of Wexford

THE FAI are expected to make a formal announcement in the next 24 to 48 hours about the outcome of Cabinteely’s appeal against a 3-0 being awarded to Galway United for a game postponed by the Dublin club last month.

The appeal was heard two weeks ago, and while no official verdict has been announced, a spokesperson for the FAI confirmed to Tribune Sport last week that the appeal had failed.

When pressed once again for an official statement this week, the same spokesperson said the FAI was “trying to sound out Cabinteely to see if they are going to take it to arbitration”. The period for arbitration runs out on Thursday of this week, with the FAI saying “we won’t be commenting until that point”.

United could do with a bit of good news to lift spirits around Eamonn Deacy Park after yet another home game without a win. That should change this Friday night, however, when the league’s whipping boys, Wexford FC, are the visitors to Eamonn Deacy Park (7.45pm).

Whatever about failing to beat Bray last week, there can be no excuse for not taking the maximum return from this Friday’s game: Wexford come into the match having lost all seven games, scoring just twice and conceding 20 goals in those seven defeats.

The visitors make the trip without their manager, having parted company with Brian O’Sullivan following last Friday’s 5-0 mauling by Cork City, bringing his three-year stint at the club to an end, which came a week after they were trounced 6-0 by UCD.

His departure does bring into the reckoning that old football quirk of a ‘bounce’ for sides after a change of manager, and United manager, John Caulfield is certainly taking nothing for granted.
