Galway take no chances in easy win over limited Laois
Laois 0-21
Galway 2-37
THEIR team selection alone was a statement of intent. Galway arrived in Portlaoise locked and fully loaded on Saturday evening. No chances were being taken with what had all the hallmarks of being a no-contest type of fixture.
Having bowed out of the championship on scoring difference four years ago, it has hardened the Tribesmen’s attitude in dispensing with inferior opposition. This was a game which offered Galway the opportunity of cutting loose, and Cathal Mannion and company weren’t found wanting.
Though the final scoreline might suggest otherwise, Galway’s 22-point trouncing of spirited Laois wasn’t entirely smooth after they exploded out of the blocks in assembling a remarkable 0-9 to 0-1 lead after only eight minutes.
We already feared Laois were heading for a championship humiliation of record proportions, but for the rest of the opening half, the Midlanders gave as got as they got, actually outscoring Galway by 11 points to nine.
That scenario must have given the Galway management plenty of scope during half-time to refocus their players, and unsurprisingly, there was no let up from the men in maroon when the action resumed.
On an evening when 14 Galway players scored – including goalkeeper Éanna Murphy from play – this latest victory has guaranteed their passage to the All-Ireland series, with a potential Leinster Final against Kilkenny early next month now on the cards.
