The Galway public has been called on to show there is an appetite for top-class League of Ireland football in the city and county by turning out in big numbers for the second-leg of the promotion play-off with UCD in Eamonn Deacy Park this coming Friday night (7.45pm).

Tommy Dunne’s side took on the Students in the first-leg in Belfield last night, and while the result is not known at the time of going to press, club treasurer Declan McDonnell is appealing to the sporting public of Galway to turn out in their droves on Friday night.

“When the club was set-up, a lot of people said it wouldn’t work, but we are now in the promotion final and playing some wonderful football. Friday night is the biggest night in the League of Ireland for a number of years in Galway, and we’d love to see the ground packed for the game.

“The way the team has been playing; the way Tommy Dunne and his team of Leo Tierney, Alan Murphy and Gary O’Connor has worked together; the way the four stakeholders have been working together behind the scenes – everyone deserves to be where we are now, and hopefully the people will show their support for the work of all of us,” McDonnell said yesterday.

Tickets for Friday’s game will go on sale from tomorrow from the ground, the Dáil Bar on Middle Street, O’Brien’s Newsagents on William Street, and from Reidy’s Menswear in the Galway Shopping Centre, and the call for support was echoed by Tierney after Friday’s game.

“This is huge result for the club,” he said after the final whistle in Tolka Park, “and the support we got the whole night was absolutely superb, it inspired the players in the second half. We’re really happy for the people who put so much work and effort into getting this club up and running, they deserve a good Friday night in EDP and we’re absolutely delighted to give that to them,” he said.
