GALWAY suffered a 4-20 to 2-16 defeat to Clare in the All-Ireland U20 Hurling Championship final on Sunday afternoon in Semple Stadium, Thurles. Clare’s clinical finishing and attacking efficiency proved decisive, as they gradually pulled away to secure the title. Having claimed the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship three years ago, Clare have now added the U20 crown, underlining the strength of their emerging talent.

Injuries played a significant role in Galway’s build-up to the All-Ireland final. While Aaron Niland returned from an ankle injury, Cullen Killeen’s involvement was cut short after he was forced off through injury.

Clare made a strong start, with full-forward Thomas O’Connor opening the scoring after just three minutes. Galway responded well and gradually worked their way back into the game through impressive attacking play from Jason Rabbitte, Brian Callanan and Jack Shaughnessy. After 20 minutes, Clare held a narrow 1-5 to 0-7 advantage.

The Banner county began to assert themselves as Fred Hegarty, Michael Collins and Paul Rodgers all added scores. On the stroke of half-time, Jamie Moylan struck Clare’s second goal, helping his side to a 2-8 to 0-9 lead at the interval.

Clare took complete control in the opening stages of the second half. Within eight minutes of the restart, goals from Marco Cleary and O’Connor stretched their lead to 4-10 to 0-9, leaving Galway with a mountain to climb. Galway struggled to match Clare’s intensity and found it difficult to contain their opponents’ attacking threat.

To their credit, Galway continued to battle and were rewarded when Brian Callanan and Jason Rabbitte found the net to narrow the deficit. Aaron Niland also made a positive contribution following his return from injury.

However, Clare continued to dominate the scoreboard in the closing stages. Further scores from Fred Hegarty, Ronan Kilroy, Paul Rodgers, Sean Boyce and Jamie Moylan ensured a comfortable ten-point victory for the men in blue and yellow.
