Boxing Ireland is sending teams to China and Scotland for international events

A number of Galway boxers have been selected for two separate Irish boxing teams that will contest championships in China and Scotland next month.

An 11-person Irish squad has been named to contest World Boxing Cup in China, including Monivea BC lightweight, Adam Hession; and 2022 World Youth Champion 80+kg Cliona D’Arcy of Tobar Pheadair BC, who makes her debut at this level.

Taking place in Guiyang City from June 15 to 20, this is the second stage in the 2026 World Boxing Cup series, taking place in Foz do Iguaçu. The series is a benchmark competition run across three tournaments, designed for Elite male and female boxers to accrue ranking points.

Champions are awarded 150 points, silver medalists 100, and there are 75 ranking points for bronze medalists.

The team leaves for China, and a two week sparring and acclimatisation camp, on Wednesday next, June 3.

Meanwhile, eight Galway boxers have been named by Boxing Ireland in its largest-ever international teams for the Four Nations tournament in Scotland this June.

Robbie Olusola of Celtic Eagles BC has been named in the elite team at 85kg; Frank Kirwin of Geesala BC has been named at U-19 90+kg; Lacey Shaughnessy of Monivea BC has been named at U-17 46kg, with Eddie Sweeney of Galway BC boxing at 66kg, and Dominick Barrett of Titans BC fighting at 80kg; while three boxers have been named at U-15 level.

The Olympic BC duo of Edward C Ward and John Paul Ward will fight at 44kg and 54kg respectively; while Conamara BC's Cora Keane will fight at 66kg.

The 2026 edition marks a revival, after a years’ long hiatus, of a tradition of competing between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.

The Irish team is drawn from 70 clubs in 25 counties and in total, 88 boxers will travel to contest for Ireland. The tournament will take place at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, Motherwell, from Thursday June 11 to Sunday June 14.

It includes boxers at all age categories from U-15 to Elite, representing Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.
