One Mayo GAA fan made a gesture of goodwill to his Galway neighbour after Pádraic Joyce’s men lost to Dublin in the All-Ireland Senior Football Quarter-Final in Croke Park on Sunday

As they say on Ramsay Street, everybody needs good neighbours and one Mayo GAA fan had a very unique but funny way of consoling his after Galway’s defeat to Dublin.

Galway were six points up and fifteen odd minutes away from a Semi Final place when they were bombarded by a ten point Boys In Blue blast which saw them leave Croke Park at the Quarter Final stage for the second year in a row.

Mayo know all too well about losing in Croke Park on big days, something which these two locals could find common ground on as the full time whistle blew.

Galway GAA fanatic Mike Connolly was taken aback to find that the man next door with the Mayo season ticket was the first to offer his condolences in the most Irish way possible.

He said: ‘Faith restored in humanity. My neighbour, a mayo season ticket holder, left a bag of cans of Budweiser on the gate with a simple message - ‘you could probably do with them after that game’. That’s what it’s all about, it’s not the game, it’s the people. Top class’.

After wins against Kildare and Westmeath, Galway were aiming to defeat Dublin and reach the All-Ireland semi-finals for the first time since 2024.

The Tribesmen appeared to in a strong position leading 1-20 to 0-17 on 55 minutes but Dublin finished strongly and hung on for a four point win. Padraic Joyce drafted both Kieran Molloy and Finnian Ó Laoi into his side as late changes, after Sean Kelly was ruled out of this clash with a shoulder injury.

However, Dublin continued to battle and O’Callaghan continued to step up to the plate and the sides were level once again, Galway defender Liam Silke was forced to pull down Colm Basquel and Dublin were awarded a penalty and Silke received a black card. O’Callaghan made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The Dubs made advantage of the extra man hitting four of the last five points through Basquel, O’Callaghan, Scully and Sean Guiden as Ger Brennan’s side advanced into the semi-finals of the All-Ireland SFC. Dublin have been drawn against Kerry and Mayo will play Louth in the All-Ireland semi-finals.
