After one year away from the top-flight, Galway romped their way to promotion in style with a four-goal blitz against Derry at Owenbeg on Sunday.

Goals from man-of-the-match Matthew Tierney, as well as Paul Conroy and Dessie Conneely had the Tribesmen 3-8 to 0-4 ahead by half-time, with Tomo Culhane adding a second in the 40th minute to put the game to bed.

The one blot on the afternoon was the 58th minute red card that saw Paul Conroy dismissed, but it made no difference to a result that was already in the bag.

Galway’s win ended Derry’s 12-game unbeaten league run, and also breached a defence that had not conceded a goal since their McKenna Cup exit to Donegal earlier in the season.

“We are happy, very happy because we knew it was going to be tough,” said Galway manager Padraic Joyce after the game.

“Coming up here and in fairness to Derry they have been going very well over this past two years but in fairness to our lads they had a brilliant performance in the first-half.
