Corofin seal their place in history with another terrific final display

Dr Crokes 0-10

Dara Bradley at Croke Park

OKAY lads, you can stop looking now, we’ve found it: the best club football team ever.

With respect to Tuam Stars and Ballinasloe’s St Grellan’s teams of yesteryear, who have more county titles, Corofin’s win on St Patrick’s Day – earning back-to-back All-Ireland titles – surpasses, by a long shot, any previous achievement of any Galway football club.

And even allowing for the pitfalls of historical comparisons, it’s right up there with the former footballing feats of club giants Crossmaglen or Nemo Rangers.

Corofin earned their fourth senior All-Ireland title on Sunday (a third in five years and second in succession), two less than the Armagh club and three less than the Cork outfit, though they’re certainly not done yet.

The Ulstermen would say ‘no’ but what boosts the North Galway club’s credentials as the greatest ever is not just their accolades, but their style of football.

They play winning football, yeah. But they play damn sexy football, too. It’s unrivalled at club level.

Kevin O’Brien’s charges gave an absolute exhibition at Croke Park as they blew away Dr Crokes, one of the few other sides with legitimate aspirations of greatness as well.

This wasn’t Mickey Mouse opposition. This was a highly-respected Killarney side who claimed seven county titles and five Munster championships this decade and one All-Ireland in 2017.

Their chances were fancied by many before throw-in. Yet, they were torn asunder by a simply awesome performance by the best kick-passing team in the country.

Corofin ran rings around Dr Crokes; schooled them in the art of teamwork and link-play and precision foot-passing and powerful running, with the ball and off-the-ball, and physicality and scoring.
