Based on the results and performances of both sides to date in the league, this was a game potentially to be controlled by the visitors with the expected outcome of a comfortable success, as Galway United were sharing top spot in the table, while winless Athlone were propping it up.

However, as sports followers will know, statistics count for little on the field of play and this contest was the perfect example of that, as lowly Athlone showed scant respect for United's lofty position as they displayed a spirit and a commitment that was testimony to new manager Martin Russell.

It was a point not lost on United manager John Caulfield afterwards.

“You never underestimate anyone in this league. Every team is competitive, and if you are not ready, you will be punished.

“Remember we came here last year and were expected to win, and we lost twice, so we are delighted to get out of here with a win. It was a good three points for us, and if you look back over the past week, we played three games and collected nine points, so we are very happy where we are,” he said.
