Carnmore’s character is critical to semis success

Carnmore 1-15
Oranmore/Maree 1-11
A sign of a good team is the ability to rise to the challenge in the face of adversity. And that’s something Carnmore showed in abundance at Pearse Stadium on Saturday as they responded to the concession of a disastrous 42nd goal to Oranmore/Maree’s Diarmuid Hanniffy to outscore their opponents 1-4 to 0-2 from there until the finish and advance to the Minor A County Final.
It had all been going perfectly to plan for the Enda Flaherty managed side until goalkeeper Torin Finnerty spilled Hanniffy’s attempt at a point into his own net, a score which handed Oranmore/Maree the lead for the first time in the game, but Carnmore responded impressively and were full value for their four-point victory.
Finnerty played a significant role in that too, making saves in either half from Alan Greene and Ronan Hanniffy and all credit to him for keeping his composure after the error.
Carnmore burst from the blocks, playing some scintillating hurling in the first few minutes of the game to race into a 0-4 to no score lead after only three minutes courtesy of brilliant scores by centre-back and captain Conor Flaherty (two, one free), All-Ireland minor medallist Enda Collins and Shaun Killilea (free).
At that stage, it looked as though Carnmore were going to run rings around Oranmore/Maree who had yet to settle, but credit to Sean Holland’s side for doing just that and fighting their way into the game with the next three scores through Dean Holland (free), Luke Holland (free) and the impressive Diarmuid Hanniffy.
