Camogie Association renames U-16 All-Ireland trophy after late Galway star

Cup that will be presented to U-16 A All-Ireland champions to be known as the Kate Moran Cup
Galway take on Kilkenny this Saturday in the final of the All-Ireland U-16A Championship Final, and they will have extra incentive to win the game after it was announced this week that the competition trophy is being named in honour of a late Galway camogie star.
The Camogie Association confirmed this week that the All-Ireland U-16 A Camogie Championship trophy will be named the Kate Moran Cup in memory of Kate Moran, who died after an accidental incident while playing for her club, Athenry, in a Galway league match against Ardrahan in April 2022, just a couple of weeks short of her 21st birthday.
Kate was a talented and dedicated player who represented her club and county with distinction, and she achieved notable success at underage level, winning two U-16A All-Ireland titles, which made oit an obvious decision to name the trophy in her honour.
"The Camogie Association is proud to make this gesture, which we hope will honour Kate’s memory in a meaningful way," said Brian Molloy, the president of the Camogie Association.
"Kate’s love for camogie was clear to all who knew her, and her passion for the game left a lasting impression on her teammates and community.
"Throughout Athenry’s All-Ireland winning campaign this past winter, I have no doubt that Kate was with them every step of the way, smiling down, pucking every ball alongside them, and sharing in those special moments.
"Her connection to the U-16 grade, where she helped Galway to two All-Ireland titles, is fittingly recognised," he said.
The Kate Moran Cup will be presented to either the Galway or Kilkenny captain after Saturday's final, which will take place in Birr as part of a double-header with the B Championship final between Kildare and Westmeath.
The double-header will be streamed live on the Camogie Association’s YouTube channel.
