COLÁISTE Bhaile Chláir sealed their place in the All Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior B hurling final after a memorable comeback in extra time on Saturday.

The Claregalway school now progress through to an All Ireland final with St Francis College, Rochestown (Cork) after this epic encounter. Coláiste Bhaile Chláir looked marginally the better side throughout normal time and led 1-16 to 1-12 after 56 minutes.

However, Damien Corbett scored a quick-fire 1-1 to level the game with the Kilkenny side racing five points ahead in extra time before being reeled in.

Cyril Donnellan’s side will feel they should have won this game inside the hour mark as Ronan Killilea saw two frees drift wide in injury time when the sides were deadlocked at 1-16 to 2-13. The Carnmore teenager responded admirably to the misses as he set up a goal in extra time while proving dangerous when moved to the edge of the square.

After Killilea’s misses, Calum Lonergan almost snatched victory for Coláiste Mhuire, but he too was off the mark with a snap shot from 55m out. Eanna O Loingsigh then saw an attempted cut back across goal drift wide as the crowd were treated to an extra 20 minutes of action.

Coláiste Mhuire showed the typical Kilkenny doggedness that makes any side emerging from the county so dangerous to face. They outscored Coláiste Bhaile Chláir 1-3 to 0-1 in the first six minutes of extra time as Corbett converted a penalty. Mark Collins took over free taking duties in extra time for Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, but he only converted one of his first three placed balls.
