2001 All-Ireland winner joins Galway U20 football backroom team

KEVIN JOHNSON has added former Galway footballer Kieran Fitzgerald to the county’s U20 Football backroom team for the 2027 season.
Galway GAA chairman Paul Bellew broke the news in an interview with Galway Bay FM’s John Morley on the radio programme Galway Talks on Friday morning.
“It’s great to see Kieran Fitzgerald is coming in with Kevin Johnson as well, that’s savage to see. You want your heros and legends from succesful days involved and that’s one example,” said Bellew on Galway Bay FM.
Fitzgerald won an All-Ireland senior football championship with Galway in 2001 where he went on to win an All-Star in the same year. During his club career he went on 14 Galway SFC titles, seven Connacht Championships and four All-Ireland titles.
He was part of the Corofin senior football backroom team alongside Kevin O’Brien in 2020. And in more recent season he was involved in the Mayo club scene with Garymore. Fitzgerald is currently coaching the Ballinrobe intermediate football team who are now into the Mayo IFC quarter-final against Ardnaree Sarsfields.
Kevin Johnson is heading into his second year in charge of the Galway U20 football team. The Tribesmen were defeated by Roscommon in the Connacht U20 Football Championship semi-final this year. Fitzgerald will join Cormac Bane, Mike Comer and Donal Ó Fátharta as part of Johnson’s backroom team.
Galway last won the Connacht U20 Football Championship in 2020 and they will be hoping to lift provincial honours for the first time in seven years in 2027.
