Items from historic Clonbrock House estate in Galway to feature at online auction

The sale, running from Wednesday, April 29 to Friday, May 1, will include a collection of pieces formerly housed at Clonbrock House, the ancestral home of the Dillon family in Ballinasloe, Ahascragh, Co Galway.

These items form part of a wider auction of more than 1,300 lots, encompassing fine art, antiques, jewellery and collectibles drawn from stately homes, private clients and estates.

The Clonbrock House collection is expected to attract particular attention, with Regency furniture commissioned by Gillows of London for Lord Clonbrock among the highlights. Several of these pieces are included across multiple lots, reflecting the scale and heritage of the original commission.

Irish and international art is also strongly represented, including a recently rediscovered work by Roderic O’Conor, alongside paintings by Nathaniel Hone and other notable art pieces. These works add further depth to a catalogue already shaped by historically significant provenance.

Beyond the Galway-linked items, the auction will also feature items from Castletown House in Celbridge, Co Kildare, as well as property from other stately homes and private collections.

Collectors will have access to a wide selection of jewellery and luxury goods, including an 18ct gold and platinum brooch and an opal-set ring from the collection of Lord and Lady Mahon. A 19th-century Irish pocket watch by John Donegan is also included.

Silverware forms another key element of the three-day sale, with a collection spanning Irish provincial and Dublin pieces, including 18th-century English silver plates and a Georgian wine cooler.

Military artefacts, ethnographical items and timepieces will also be offered for auction.

Bidding will be available online, as well as through telephone and absentee options, with a full illustrated catalogue already accessible.

A preview event takes place from Sunday, April 26 to Tuesday, April 28 at the auction rooms in Castlecomer.

An auction representative said the sale offers “a chance to acquire something unique, special and reflective of individual taste”.
