Sometimes you’re better off keeping it to yourself

A Different View with Dave O’Connell

It’s absolutely brilliant that people are baking bread and making best use of their brown bananas, and it’s equally fantastic that families are putting the pandemic to good use by cleaning out that cluttered spare room or shed.

But what makes them think it’s critical to round this off with a photograph of their efforts, plastered all over social media?

Some people post pictures of their dinner, as if grilling a piece of steak and bringing potatoes to the boil is an achievement to stand alongside scaling Everest.

And maybe it is – but are we actually so bored by the lack of live sport that we’ve turned to analysing the quality of cooked meat or roasted carrots instead?

Take the latest social media ‘phenomenon’; putting up a pic to show that you need a haircut, over-exaggerated by fluffing up your bed-head so you look like some mad yoke who lives in a ditch.

Or the other side of the coin, when you take a clippers to your head and emerge newly-shorn and looking like you’ve either been found with nits in a 1920s orphanage or you’re off to fight in World War II.

Here’s the truth of the matter; we all need a haircut, and outside of the small percentage of the population who are either hairdressers or barbers, none of us are able to do it ourselves.

There is no consolation in either knowing that there are others with messier heads than ours, or that those who have taken the task into their own hands, now have skulls that look like they were scalped with a blunt lawn mower.

The more fundamental question is why nobody wants to do things quietly anymore; just keeping it within the four walls of the family home.
