Sarsfields out of sorts
By Eanna O’Reilly
AFTER seeing his team relinquish their All-Ireland crown on Saturday in Nowlan Park, Sarsfields manager Michael ‘Hopper’ McGrath was naturally very disappointed. Nevertheless, he credited Oulart the Ballagh for their excellent performance on the day and for showing the quality required to triumph over his own side.
‘‘Look, we knew Oulart were going to be a top-class team. They played very well, and they capitalised on every mistake we made out there today. They came at us hard in the first half and that [concession of] 2-4 was always going to be difficult to come back from. They hit us with killer goals, twice in the second half, after we had scored goals ourselves. They were huge blows to us, but that’s the quality they [Oulart] have and you have to give them credit today.’’
The Sarsfields boss had regrets about an error strewn performance, particularly in the first half, which denied his side any momentum and undermined their efforts against a quality Oulart side. The Wexford champions applied huge pressure on Sarsfields from the opening whistle and forced them into making numerous uncharacteristic errors.
‘‘We just made too many mistakes, our touch was off, we fumbled balls we wouldn’t normally have done, and some of those mistakes led to goals. They [Oulart] were very sharp, they really took advantage during that spell [in the first half]. We left a few balls there in our own square we maybe could have cleared, and no better team than Oulart to punish you in that situation.’’
