Local organisers of the Volvo Ocean Race have pledged that South Park will be fully restored to it original state.

President of Let's do it Global, John Kileen says poor weather conditions are hampering the final phase clean up but that the work will go ahead as soon as possible.

The remainder of work which is set to be carried out is re seeding of the grass and levelling track ways.

Meanwhile Galway City Council has confirmed that 10 per cent of their 250 thousand contribution to the Volvo Ocean Race will be held for clean up costs as the bad weather led to unpredicted damage to the area.

Mayor Terry O'Flaherty says that along with the Lets Do it Global volunteers, the 25,000 euro will be use to ensure the park is fully restored to its original standard
