Work is underway to reduce waiting times at the emergency unit in University Hospital Galway from 14 to 6 hours.

That's according to Galway West Labour TD Derek Nolan who met with Clinical Director Dr David O'Keefe and the Registrar of the A &E yesterday to highlight the capacity problems at the unit.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM news, Deputy Nolan says a rebalancing of services, a new 32 bed medical admissions unit and a surgical unit should assist in achieving the reduction in waiting times by christmas.

Meanwhile Deputy Nolan has also dismissed claims made by Fianna Fail Health Spokesperson Deputy Billy Kelleher that he is turning to the media instead of Health Minister James Reilly.

He saws he was not being opportunistic but simply gathering facts which he will then present to Minister Reilly.
