Two river management plans aimed at improving the condition of water flowing into and around Galway have been approved by members of Galway County council.

Agreement was reached following heated debate on one of the plans- the western river basin management plan, which was presented at last evening's council meeting.

Several councillors felt this plan would adversely impact on farming and rural communities, due to an increase in agricultural inspections as well as stricter regulation on septic sewage tanks.

Eventually members agreed to adopt both the western river basin and Shannon river basin plans to include minor amendments .
