NORTEL TO BE SOLD IN BID TO SAVE GALWAY JOBS

Telecommunications company, Nortel, which has a base at Mervue in the city, is being sold for 900 million U.S dollars.The company was placed on bankruptcy protection earlier this year in a bid to save jobs including 300 at its Galway facility.However, Nortel later announced that it was trying to secure a buyer for the international firm.It's understood communications technology giant, Avaya, is to acquire the company.The Galway division of Nortel has been in the city for more than 30 years and it's hoped the sale of the company will secure the 300 jobs here.
