World Death Penalty Day is being marked in Galway today.

A silent vigil and petitioning will take place at Shop street in the city from one, followed by a walk to NUI Galway where a silent vigil will also take place.

Events are also being held in Dublin and Cork.

Amnesty International says it's hard to believe that to this day, 21 countries around the world continue to sentence people to death.

The group is campaigning for the release of Anthony Haynes - who's due to be executed in Texas later this month for killing a police man in 1999.

Spokesperson Noeleen Hartigan says there are still question marks surrounding his case
