Work to begin on Connemara greenway by April

Galway bay fm newsroom - Work is expected to start on the first phase of the Connemara greenway by April.

The four kilometre section from Clifden to Derrylea will cost hundreds of thousands of euro and will be funded by Failte Ireland.

The route proposed for the Connemara greenway is over 51 kilometres in length and most of it follows the old Connemara railway line.

The plans for the cycle and walking route were the focus of an oral hearing held in Clifden in late 2012 and An Bord Pleanala approved the project with certain conditions last March.

Galway County Council is still negotiating with landowners along the planned 52 kilometre stretch from Clifden to Oughterard.

It's set to cost over 9 million euro and a funding application has been submitted to Failte Ireland.

It's expected work on the first section from Clifden to Derrylea will begin in March or April.
