CITY Council staff resumed work yesterday morning at the composting plant at Carrowbrowne following reassurances about their personal safety in the wake of threats made to them over recent weeks.

Three City Council employees returned to the site on Monday morning accompanied by Gardai who carried out a full inspection of their workplace – there was no trouble at the site, The Sentinel has learned.

The facility had been closed since the previous Monday – June 21 – after staff at the site had been threatened because of the removal of horses grazing on the old landfill site, beside the composting plant.A spokesman for the City Council confirmed yesterday that the plant had re-opened for business with the employees back to work there since Monday morning.

The Sentinel has also learned that a number of horses – possibly up to nine – were removed from the landfill site in the early hours of Friday morning last and impounded.

SIPTU Regional Secretary, Michael Kilcoyne, who represents the workers at the site, told The Sentinel he welcomed the fact that the plant had re-opened this week.
