Work on new 75-bed block at UHG could start by end of year

Work on a new 75 bed ward block could start at the end of the year at University Hospital Galway once approval is received for its operational costs.
Substandard wards at the hospital are set to be decommissioned and will be replaced by the new four storey block to the rear of the existing building in a void between the Maternity Unit and the Clinical Research Facility.
HSE West had already been given planning permission for the project as well as approval for the capital funding of €12 million.
Procurement process is already underway and work is expected to start on it by the end of this year.
The block will contain 75 single occupancy rooms, each with en suite facilities, which will give patients dignity and privacy as well as being best practice for the control of infection, according to Colette Cowan, Group Director of Nursing and Midwifery, speaking at the first public meeting of the new hospitals board in Galway on Tuesday.
It will also address the deficit of 30 medical beds and reconfigurate existing beds.
