Water deliveries relief for Aran islands

Islanders on two of the Aran Islands who are experiencing water shortages were relieved when water containers were delivered by ferry last evening.

Water restrictions have been imposed on Inis Óirr and Inis Meáin in the past two weeks but yesterday, Irish Water and Galway County Council organised a delivery of water by ferry and will continue with daily deliveries of drinking water until the crisis is over.

The first delivery of around 120,000 litres of water was welcomed by islanders on the two islands but water restrictions continue until further notice. Irish Water and the Council have promised to replenish water reserves at the source on the island.

Meanwhile, Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív has called for water rates to be quashed for Aran islanders because of the annual summer water rationing on the islands.

“An emergency operation is currently underway to deal with water shortages on Inis Meáin. Reservoir levels have fallen to critically low levels on the island and around 50,000 gallons of waters are expected to be ferried to the island every day.

“The situation on the islands is completely unacceptable. Residents have been forced to put up with water restrictions during June and July, and now drastic measures are having to be taken to ensure that people have a sufficient supply.”
