The Volvo Ocean race, which sails into Galway next Summer, is officially kicking off in Spain today.

Alicante is the first of ten ports hosting the 2011-2012 Volvo ocean race, while Galway will host the final leg of the race.

Thousands have flocked to the Spanish port as it opens for a three week fiesta.

Tonight a Rolling Stones tribute concert will be held before the six teams competing in the world-wide yacht race are presented to the crowds.

The 2009 Galway Volvo ocean race generated millions of euro for the local economy and was a huge success globally.
