Valeo expansion to deliver 100-job New Year boost for Tuam

More than 100 new jobs are to be announced at Tuam’s biggest employer in the New Year – providing Galway with a major confidence boost in the process as the economic tide turns.

The jobs are expected to be provided at Valeo Visions Systems although the company and the IDA will not be making an announcement until January at the earliest.

But Mayor of Tuam Cllr. Imelda Kelly has been informed that the jobs are in the pipeline and described it as a major boost to the town and the region.

Last week 300 new jobs were announced for Limerick and now Tuam is set for a major employment injection to a company which will now have more than 650 people working for it.

The Mayor told The Connacht Tribune that she had been informed by sources within the IDA that an announcement was imminent.

“It has been very noticeable that the company has expanded significantly over the past few months and is now making provision to take on new workers.

“Since their arrival in the town more than six years ago they have become a major employer and long may this situation will continue.

“I have been told that the town will get an additional 100 jobs and hopefully this will do something to stem the tide of emigration locally,” Mayor Kelly added.

While Tuam remains one of the worst unemployment blackspots in the county, Valeo Vision Systems is providing vital employment in the area.

It is some turnaround to 2008 when Valeo, which employed 260 at the time, had sought redundancies and had put staff on short time working arrangements.

But since then, the Tuam automotive suppliers have experienced an upturn in business and when this new recruitment drive is completed, they will have more than doubled their workforce.
