United's poor league record against Cork City continues

GALWAY United hit the net twice in Turner’s Cross for the second time in two seasons, but just like last year, they left empty handed as the home side continued their push for European qualification.United took a shock fifth minute lead thanks to an own goal from City defender Kevin Long, while Alan Murphy edged closer to Paul McGee’s league goals record for United, the Mayoman’s second goal in two games bringing him to 66 in his United career, and he is now just eight short of McGee’s haul of 76.It counted for little in the end, however, as the home side left their serious financial difficulties to one side to put in arguably their best performance of the season, and the win sees them stay just behind third-placed Derry City on goal difference, although they do have a game in hand. United were again without Derek O’Brien and Iarflaith Davoren, while John Russell was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench, where he was joined by Shane Guthrie, who returned from suspension. The only change Foster made to the side that stunned Derry City in the Brandywell the previous Tuesday was the introduction of Shane Fitzgerald for Dave Cooke, who was ruled out through injury, but both Russell and Guthrie were introduced at half-time on Friday as United struggled to cope with the onslaught from the home side.
