Under 50 percent of county homes in unfinished housing estates occupied

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Less than half of homes in unfinished housing estates in County Galway are complete and occupied.

The results of the 2013 national housing development survey reveal that just over 15 hundred or 49.6% of dwellings in 68 such estates are being lived in.

Of the remaining 1600 homes, 295 are complete and vacant, 300 are near complete, 417 are not started, planning is expired on 443, and works have begun on 140.

In the city, 56% or over 1 thousand of homes in 15 unfinished housing estates are complete and occupied.

On the national front, the figures show the number of unfinished housing estates has fallen by almost 59 percent.

At least 40 of the housing estates have been deemed unviable ghost estates - and will be demolished.

They're located in counties where the Housing Minister says there wasn't demand for estates - including Roscommon, Leitrim and Cavan.

However Jan O'Sullivan says the cost of the work will not fall on taxpayers.
