University Hospital Galway has warned of long waits in its Emergency Department, with all available beds full after an “extremely busy” weekend.

People are being urged to attend University Hospital Galway’s Emergency Department only in an emergency as overcrowding leaves patients facing long waits.

All available hospital beds are in use following an “extremely busy” weekend, with 55 patients awaiting beds on Monday morning, October 19. Of those, 34 were in the Emergency Department.

Additional surge beds are also in use as high numbers of patients need admission for ongoing treatment.

The hospital is asking people to contact their GP or out-of-hours service first where possible.

Community pharmacists can also advise on minor illnesses, with participating pharmacies offering treatment for eight common conditions under the HSE’s Common Conditions Service.

Pressure on bed capacity has prompted a review of planned procedures, with urgent and time-sensitive cases taking priority.

Patients whose procedures are postponed will be contacted directly. Those due for admission are asked to contact the hospital in advance to confirm a bed is available.

The hospital said it was taking all possible measures to improve patient flow and reduce delays, including discharging patients ready to return home so beds can be freed up as quickly as possible.

It acknowledged the difficulties facing patients and their families, apologising for the “inconvenience and distress” caused, while Roscommon Injury Unit remains open daily from 8am to 8pm, treating adults and children over five for a range of injuries.

The hospital stressed that everyone attending the Emergency Department will be treated, with priority given to those who are seriously ill or injured. Patients with less urgent needs may face longer waits.
