UHG receives highest number of food compaints
Galway Bay fm newsroom – University Hospital Galway has received the highest number of complaints in the country regarding food served to patients this year. Today's Irish Independent reports that 35 complaints were received by the HSE about the food served to patients at Galway University Hospitals between January 1st and March 1st. One complainant called for a HSE investigation after her 88-year-old mother was left unfed for more than a day in March 2012. In another case, a diabetic patient bought his own food in the hospital shop, as he claimed the dinner he'd received was ‘inedible.' The HSE says it engages with patients and carries out regular surveys in relation to catering at its hospitals. An average of 633 thousand euro is spent every year on food for patients at UHG and Merlin Park Hospital. Meals are prepared in-house by a contracted catering company, and the contract is currently out to tender.
