Two Galway raised bogs are among those to be included in the first phase of a rewetting process.

It's part of ongoing work to protect and restore 53 sites nationwide deemed special areas of conservation under the EU Habitats Directive.

The Galway bogs are Lisnageeragh and Carra na gCappaill.

The work seeks to re-establish water levels in high bog areas followed by an examination of drains in the peripheral areas.

Consultants have already carried out topographical surveys on the bogs.

They hope to meet with impacted landowners over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association met in Athlone  last Monday

The group argues that the plan is 'premature' and 'dangerous' and adds that no agreement has been reached with the majority of affected turfcutters on relocation or otherwise.
