Two die in tragic Gort house fire
Two people – a man in his thirties and a second person, believed to be a woman in her sixties – have died following a house fire in the centre of Gort overnight.
The blaze broke out at Tom O'Donnell's flats on Station Road shortly before 3am this (Thursday) morning. The building is just off Main Street and close to a number of retail premises.
Four units of the fire brigade from Gort and Loughrea attended the scene, and spent over three hours bringing the blaze under control.
The bodies of two people were recovered from the building, and they have been taken to University Hospital Galway where post mortem examinations will be carried out.
The property has been sealed off pending a technical examination of the scene. It is understood no one else was in the house at the time.
