TWO BABY SISTERS DIE IN N17 ROAD INCIDENT NEAR DUNMORE TURN OFF

A 2 year old girl and her 3 month old baby sister have died in a road incident on the N17 near the turn off for Dunmore just before 1 this afternoon

The babies were being taken for a walk by their father and all three were hit by a car as they were walking on the hard shoulder on the Milltown side of Tuam

It's thought the driver of the car may have become ill and veered off the road

All four were brought to University Hospital Galway where the two baby girls were pronounced dead a short time later

The father of the girls has sustained injuries but they are not life threatening

The driver of the car - the sole occupant - is also being treated at UHG but his condition is not thought to be life threatening
