TUI President calls for funding for institutes of technology including GMIT

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The President of the Teachers Union of Ireland says more funding is needed for institutes such as GMIT to meet the future needs of the Irish economy.

The number of students at GMIT increased by over 17 per cent between 2008 and 2012 despite a reduction in the number of lecturers by around 8 per cent.

The Galway Mayo Insitute of Technology has five campuses at locations including the city, Letterfrack and Mountbellew.

There are 353 whole time equivalent teaching staff at GMIT and over 8 thousand full and part time students.

Nationally, the TUI says funding for the sector has decreased by 22 percent.
