Tuam town council is to offer grant support for small initiatives to improve local areas.

Director of services Frank Gilmore made the offer during a debate on illegal dumping and vacant properties in the town.

The matter was raised by Councillor Tom Reilly after he had met with the local Gilmartin Road residents committee who were concerned that there were 15 vacant local authority houses in the area. In response council officials pointed out that two adjacent properties in the area were the subject of a legal injunction and that there was nothing the council could do about them at the moment. The other properties had been boarded up as people on the housing waiting list were not inclined to want to live in the area.
