Tuam farmers market threatened by legislation
Galway Bay fm newsroom - The possibility of market stalls, including a farmer’s market, in Tuam’s revamped Shambles Car Park has been delayed by national legislation.
Members of the Town council discussed the matter at a meeting this week.
Cllr Paul O’Grady asked when would it be possible for Tuam to have a licensed market on Saturdays in a designated area of the revamped Shambles Car Park.
But Acting Director of Services Liam Gavin told him that the county council were still waiting for national guidelines to be issued by the Department of the Environment regarding the licensing of markets and so far these new guidelines have not emerged.
Cllr Tom Reilly said he was disappointed that they would have to wait for national guidelines and he felt that the county council should decide.
But he was assured by the council official that this was not possible as issues including insurance, public liability and the size and number of stands at such markets would have to be in accordance with national guidelines.
