A deputation from Tuam is to seek political support in preventing Toghermore residential house from closure.

It follows last night's two hour long meeting on the issue with town councillors, TD Paul Connaughton, members of Tuam Mental Health Service and HSE representatives.

Letters are to be sent to Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health Kathleen Lynch, Health Minister James Reilly, and all Galway East TDs in a bid to garner support to keep the facility open.

An independent report delivered to the HSE last month revealed the building did not meet minimum fire and safety standards.

The HSE is now in the process of moving its 16 residents to different locations.

A preliminary costing puts the necessary works at up to 300 thousand euro, and the HSE has admitted this was a factor in the decision to close the service.
