The Tuam bypass could be built as a stand-alone project if the M17 Gort to Tuam motorway is not built.

Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, was responding to questions by Labour T.D Colm Keaveney in the Dáil.

There are concerns that the M17/M18 motorway project, which is a Public - Private Partnership won't be completed because of economic uncertainty.

It's understood the investors, BAM Balfour Beatty, are fearful of investing such a large sum, given the current economic climate.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Keaveney says it's imperative that the motorway to Tuam is built.

Minister Varadkar says a stand-alone project for Tuam could be considered if the motorway is abandoned.
