Tuam company exceeds redundancy target

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Following consultations, a Tuam company is to make 68 staff members redundant, 8 more than originally intended. Contact lense manufacturer Transitions Optical on the Dunmore Road announced last month that it would be making up to 60 job cuts. The manufacturing volume at the Tuam base, which currently has over 170 employees, is being reduced as part of production is being moved to Asia to look after clients there. In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, Plant Director Kevin Minton says the company has worked with staff over the past 30 days to minimise the number of redundancies. It was hoped that no more than 60 jobs would be lost. Workers will receive a comprehensive redundancy package and outplacement programme to help them find alternative employment. It's expected that the redundancies will be completed on a phased basis by the end of the year.
