Galway city council is hoping to take the lead role in designing the improvements needed at Ballindooley Cross on the Headford Road.

However, since part of the 4-way junction is in the county, the county council will have to agree that the city council take the lead.

Last night's city council meeting heard that traffic lights are the preferred upgrade option at this stage but discussions will be held with the National Roads Authority's safety inspector.

The city council has been given five thousand euro in funding to get the design work done by the National Roads Design office.
