SIPTU trade union is calling for a consultation process ahead of the proposed closure of a disability services facility in Ballinasloe. The HSE is proposing to close Hawthorn House on the 28th of September. The home currently facilitates up to 30 intellectually disabled people, who will be moved to other houses in the Ballinasloe service.SIPTU claims the plans will remove privacy from the users of the service, and make contact with families even more difficult.Local SIPTU health organiser Paul Hardy says the relocation plans are just not suitable.
