A sum of €300,000 is being set aside in Galway County Councils roads budget this year for further planning work on the proposed new south Connemara road.

Questions are being raised about this expenditure as there are strong indications that the project may have to be abandoned…or stalled indefinitely.

About 3 million Euro has been spent already on planning and other aspects of the route and while Councillors say it is needed many say that the route is wrong.

They say it should be further north along the mountains but planners say the mountain area is not an option due to environmental desnigations.

A meeting of Connemara councillors is to take place in three weeks time to discuss this matter.
