There are long delays on the N17 on the Galway Tuam road for the second evening in a row

Motorists are reporting of being in their cars for hours and making little or no progress in their journeys during this peak period

A spokesperson for the Gardai told Galway Bay fm News that they inspected the traffic lights in Claregalway village today and are satisfied they're working well

The spokesperson said the problems are being caused by the increase in the volume of traffic as motorists avoid the slippy back roads to make their way home

Driving conditions are deteriorating as temperatures fall rapidly in the darkness and motorists are asked to take care

These conditions are set to last at least into early next week and Galway could be set for more snow tonight as Met Eireann has issued a severe weather warning.

A severe ground frost is expected tonight with temperatures dipping to between minus 4 and minus 11 degrees celcius.
