A judge has asked to view CCTV of a fight involving a large group of young males in Eyre Square during which it is alleged a teenager ran inside Supermac's and stole a knife.

Judge Fiona Lydon said she normally would not ask to view CCTV at this stage of proceedings, but, after hearing an outline of the alleged facts, said this was a "serious incident".

A 17-year-old boy appeared at the children's court in Galway charged with three offences arising from the incident at Supermac's Eyre Square on July 28, 2024.

He is charged with affray, theft of a knife and production of an article during the course of a dispute, contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

Inspector John Moloney told the court that at approximately 6.30pm on July 28, 2024, a group of young males were fighting outside Supermac's.

It would be alleged that the accused boy went inside, reached over a counter and grabbed a large knife.

Security staff managed to disarm the boy before he was able to get outside with the weapon, the court was told.

Judge Lydon said she would like to view CCTV before making a decision on jurisdiction - the trial venue of the case.

Judge Lydon said the court needed to understand the full context of the incident as this was a "serious incident".

The boy was accompanied in court by his parents and was represented by solicitor, Michael Cunningham.

He had been previously refused bail and remanded in detention to a later date.
