The Government urgently needs to invest in Irish tourism, if the sector is to survive the recession, according to the Irish Hotels Federation.

The group is holding its annual conference in Galway today.

It estimates that the industry dropped almost one million visitors and dropped one billion euro in revenue last year.

The number of visitors has fallen by 16 per cent, to its lowest level in 12 years.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Martin Cullen are due in Galway to address the conference.
