Summer is due date for delivery of CT scanner
A long-awaited CT scanner at Portiuncula Hospital is due for delivery in June – the HSE has stated it will be operational by the end of July ‘or thereabouts’.
This comes following repeated breakdowns in the hospital’s existing machine, leading to extended waiting times for patients.
In response to a question from Cllr Evelyn Parsons, Assistant National Director for HSE Capital and Estates West, Joe Hoare, said preparatory works for the arrival of the new machine were ongoing.
“Building works are at an advanced stage to accommodate the replacement CT scanner with construction of the under croft works, link corridor and as also and IT core room ongoing.
“The replacement CT has been ordered and is due for delivery around the end of June 2022,” said Mr Hoare.
“It is anticipated that the new CT will then be installed, commissioned and ready for operational use by the end of July 2022 or thereabouts. A temporary CT scanner is also now onsite and is currently being commissioned.”
Cllr Parsons said the announcement of a date was welcome, as was the installation of a temporary scanner.
However, she raised questions over the timeline for the delivery of the new 50-bed unit at the Ballinasloe hospital – projected to cost in the region of €25 million.
“It is expected to be completed by March 2024 – that seems a long way off, but it is good to see that it’s moving forward,” said Cllr Parsons.
Mr Hoare confirmed that enabling works on the site were completed at the end of last year, including electrical infrastructure as well as gas and water works.
“The tender process for the main works, namely the construction of the new ward block, has also been completed.
