Shaskeen for charity concert in St NicholasÕ Church

Galway based traditional group Shaskeen are playing a special benefit concert in St Nicholas’ Church in aid of the Samaritans and the historic Church this Friday, March 2.

The concert will be recorded by Forefront Productions for a documentary on the life and times of the band since it was formed in London in May 1970.

Following their successful 40th anniversary tour celebrations in 2010 and the launch of their 15th album, Shaskeen have played many successful concerts in London, France, Germany and Scotland, as well as at home in Ireland.

The group’s current line up is Patsy McDonagh on accordion, Eamon Cotter on concert flute, Pat Broderick on uilleann pipes, Geraldine Cotter on piano, Pat Costello on vocals and guitar, Tom Cussen on banjo and Johnny Donnellan on guitar.

They will be joined for the concert by former members, including Benny O’Connor on drums, John Dooley on vocals, Mike Fahy on vocals, Kevin Rohan on fiddle and vocals. The Rev Gary Hastings, Rector of St Nicholas’ will also take part, playing concert flute. The money from Friday night’s concert will go jointly to the Samaritans and St Nicholas’ Church.

There is a very large upkeep on the church, which is almost in its eight century and which is a very important resource and facility for the whole city at a spiritual, cultural and historic level.

The Samaritans provide 24-hour, confidential, non-judgemental emotional support to anybody experiencing feelings of distress or despair. While the helpline is completely staffed by volunteers, there are still costs in running the service. The group will use funds from this concert to publicise its helpline in the city and county.

There is no admission fee for this concert, but people can give a donation, known as ‘a retiring fee’ after the event. Doors for the concert are at 7.30pm.
