It is in a time of crisis that we see the true value of our healthcare workers, the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is proving this above all else – and one business man put aside his own woes to show how much he and his customers appreciated that..

Kevin Nugent, owner of local café and restaurant Mr Waffle directly across the road from UHG, closed his doors to the general public on foot of the spread of the virus on Monday.

But he remains committed to giving back to the community in whatever way he could, setting up an online fundraiser to support healthcare workers in their efforts against the virus,

So far, his GoFundMe page has raised over €6,000 which Kevin has set aside for providing lunches to the staff at UHG.  The idea stemmed out of a successful in-store collection last week which took in over €200.

Speaking to the Connacht Tribune, Kevin said the idea started when customers began asking about donating to him to fee the hard working staff across the road form him in UHG.

“Basically it all started with a few people last week in the restaurant asking about donating to feed the staff and I set up a collection in the shop and put €250 in myself.”

After a discussion with Tribe Hospitality’s marketing manager Cian Raftery last Friday evening, Kevin decided to move the fundraiser online, with the aim of raising €500 for the cause.

However by the weekend the page had amassed over €3,500 worth of donations.
