A small group of protestors demonstrated outside a circus in the city this afternoon to highlight their opposition to the use of animals in the show.

The protestors, representing the animal rights action group ARAN, gathered outside Tom Duffy's circus on the headford road for almost an hour this afternoon.

The demonstration is part of a national campaign by ARAN to put a stop to animal acts in circuses, replacing them with people-performance shows.

Thousands of people have attended Tom Duffy's circus since it arrived in the city last week, and the last show is tommorow. (SUNDAY 5)

A spokesperson says traditional circus with animals is a recognised art form in Ireland and never once in the last 200 years has there ever been any allegation of animal cruelty, mistreatment or or abuse at Tom Duffy's.
